The law of two feet - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
The law of two feet - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Inspired by a question on the OSlist (the Open Space mailing list), I wrote the following observations on the law of two feet. The law of two feet states, that in Open Space meetings, any time you feel that youre not learning and not contributing, you can use your two feet to go somewhere else. This of course stands in startk contrast to many other kinds of gatherings, where it is considered impolite, counter-productive or rude to leave in the middle of a session. The question was: The Law of Two Feet gives you the chance to step out of those situations, which seem to be awkward and problematic but if you are brave enough and stay there, maybe you can solve your problems. Isnt it dangerous to step out of each situation which we find at first sight uncomfortable or boring. Maybe it is just the temptation to escape and avoid something. Ive struggled with exactly this dilemma. If people leave at the first sign of trouble, will they grow and learn? The funny thing is, that stating the law of two feet does NOT induce people to just up and go at the first hint of conflict. Paradoxically, people are probably more likely to stay, and definitely more open and constructive when they know that it is OK to leave even if they dont use that option. Being in a difficult situation is made infinitely worse, if you know that you cant get out of it. Also, stating that people are free to leave, is no more than stating a fact. OS participants can get up and go any time they choose I mean nobodys tied them to their chairs. In fact this is true of any kind of meeting. There is nothing holding you in your chair, other than your own decision to not get up and leave. So acknowledging the fact that youre free to go brings us a little closer to how things are, brings us more in tune with reality, than saying You have to stay for the entire session. This is one of those paradoxical situations, where you actually achieve the opposite of what you might think, ie. where reminding people of their freedom to leave, probably makes it more likely that they stay :o) Thanks for visiting my blog. Why ( How!) to Care About Your Career When Everything Else Feels More Important - When I Grow Up
Why ( How!) to Care About Your Career When Everything Else Feels More Important - When I Grow Up Its been a week and change already, and I think were all still grieving. We feel numb. Were angry. Were coming out of a shocked, stunned state. But also: were empowered. Were rising up. Weve promised to do all we can to protect our fundamental rights. Most of us have already given donations and/or volunteered our time to the groups that are aligned with our values. Weve formed and joined private Facebook groups that are all about taking action. When the world feel like its about to fall apart, or implode, and that our basic civil liberties are at stake How the heck do you care about your career? How the heck do you put your own health and happiness first? How the heck do you make the time to work on your own plans? Who are you to do work you love? Who are you to help others better themselves? Who are you to break from the pact? Youre not special. You should keep in your lane. Make time only to volunteer to better the world, not your own life. It feels selfish, right? You feel like an egotistical jerk, right? As you can imagine, my answer is: NO. A bigly (I cant help myself) NO. When I heard the news last week that my candidate the one who ran on a platform of love and tolerance, the one who was going to shatter the biggest glass ceiling, the one who was predicted by every poll in the land to win win win lost, I felt bad about so much. I worried about my friends who could potentially be deported, or whose families might no longer be legally recognized. I worried about my own healthcare and a womans right to choose and racism against my transracial family. I had one thing on the calendar that day to do: a one-on-one session. And I thought, immediately: Oh, how I am looking forward to that session. This is where and how I contribute good to this world. Im hippy-dippy enough to believe that the more people who do their best work most often, the happier and healthier and kinder the Universe. Its constant light, love, and happiness. I can picture it in my mind, leaving the world aglow. Its the ultimate tool for Good, our greatest kryptonite. It was also not lost on me that the client I was working with that day was one who was building a program to help people who want to be part of creating more social justice. My best work that leads to her best work will create a ripple effect of positive change in the world, in the form of tiny and powerful footsteps. Oh, how I am so glad I work for myself. I didnt have to deal with a crowded commute to an office Id be chained to for 8 hours. I was able to look at my To Do list, follow through on the most important task, and reschedule the rest. I was able to spend time in a bath with my journal, and take a nap mid-day, and watch 2 episodes of Judge Judy in the morning. I was able to play with my baby and pick up the house and just take care of myself in a way I couldnt if someone else was calling the shots. Being our own boss and building businesses that serve our greatest good while contributing goodness to othersthats a big piece of making the world a better place. Honestly, its selfish to think otherwise. Questions To Ask When Conducting a Phone Interview
Questions To Ask When Conducting a Phone Interview Pre-screening potential new hires over the phone is essential to hiring the best possible employees. By effectively conducting phone interviews, you will save valuable time and improve the quality of your future teammates. Here are five great phone interview questions you can ask duringa phone interview to determine whether this is a candidate youd like to bring in for a formal interview.1. Tell me what you like most about this role and our company.I love this question because it lets you know immediately how much effort the candidate has put in up until now. Has he/she researched the company? What does he/she know about the position? Does he/she have similar core values? Serious candidates should be prepared for this question and should have a genuine-sounding answer about why the role appeals to them and why they believe theyd be a great fit.2. Why are you leaving your current role? This is a great question to ask to determine if th is potential new candidate is a good match for your role and your company. For example, if they are leaving their current job because they want to puruse a position thats mora in line with an interest they have, but you know they wouldnt have the chance to explore that interest in the role youre offering, this may not work out. Still, make sure to listen to the intervieweesentire answer before making a judgement call. Sometimes there is more to the story than they originally let on. Dont be afraid to ask a few detailed questions.3. What are your strengths/what kind of work do you most enjoy?I like to ask this question both from a professional and personal standpoint. I like to know what they are best at in the workplace as well as what they enjoy doing outside of work. Im looking for someone who has good balance in life and possesses skills that will translate into my team.4. What type of work do you not enjoy? Most people perform better at things they enjoy and worse at things they dont. I want to know that my employees enjoy (or at least dont hate) the tasks they will be expected to perform. If my new position involves a lot of desk work, but the candidate hates being on the computer, it probably will not work out long term.5. What are your salary expectations? While asking about salary history is now (understandably) illegal in some cities and states because it could unfarily subject someone to being underpaid throughout the course of their career, it isideal to get a sense of what a candidate expects or hopes for in terms of salary.Gathering this infocan save you a lot of time why spend an hour interviewing someone who wont take the job unless you can pay them twice what youre able to? It can also help you gauge whether your offer is realistic. If you have a salary in mind for the position, yet everyone you speak to is expecting to make twice that amount, you may need to rethink your plan.Take some time to think through the questions you will ask during your phone interview and what you are hoping to learn from each question. By doing so, youll be sure to end up with the best candidates for the job--Melissa is a success coach to high-achieving women.
